myBlueprint Challenge!
Parents, we need your help!!!  Your child is involved in a December myBlueprint challenge!  All students have been asked to post a reflection on something they are proud of from the first few months of school.  We would like all parents to log in to myBlueprint and share a comment on your child's reflection.  Any student who participates will be entered into a draw to be an Administrator for a Morning! Please post your comment before the end of the day on Thursday, December 15.  If you have any troubles logging in to myBlueprint, please connect with your child's teacher.
Reading Support at School and Home
This week we began our second cycle of literacy support for our grade 1 - 4 students.  Each 6 week literacy cycle is driven by our on-going reading assessments.  Students are grouped and provided targeted literacy instruction in a small group through guided reading, word work, phonics, sight word, and vocabulary building activities.  The targeted instruction is provided for approximately 30 minutes, four days per week.  While different groups may work with adults in different spaces, everyone is participating in the same activities, adjusted to their reading level.
You can have an active role in supporting reading development at home.  We encourage all parents to read with your child for at least 4 days a week (more if you can make it work).  Reading for 15 - 30 minutes a day with your child is an excellent way to build their skills and confidence.  Your child has access to a number of books in their classroom library and the Learning Commons.  You are also encouraged to drop by the Cochrane Library to find some books that interest your child.
Here are a few fun ways to read with your child:
  • Read to me - your child can listen to you read fluently and with expression.  You can also show your child how to track the words as you read
  • Read with me - you and your child can take turns reading
  • Listen to me read - your child can read to you.  This is important for our FI students
  • Listen to reading with me - listen to reading together, asking questions and making meaning together
Students at Glenbow also have access to online reading programs.  These include Raz Kids and Je lis.  Students can listen to these books and practice reading at home.  If you have any questions about accessing the programs, please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher.
The important piece in all of this is to make reading fun and joyful.  Making reading a regular part of your routine at home is an excellent way to reinforce the work that your child is doing at school and gives you an opportunity to support their hard work and it is quality time spent with your child!
If you have any questions, please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher.
Save the Date!  We are excited to share that we will be hosting a family literacy night on February 9th.   We hope you will join us.  More information to come in the new year!
Glenbow Has A Parent Lending Library!
Glenbow has a Home Lending Library with interactive and educational games that can be checked out and taken home to play as a family. Parents can drop by the school to sign out any of the games or write a note in your child's agenda and we can send it home for you to play.
Thank you to our School Council for using their grant money to purchase these fun activities!

Are you interested in being a volunteer reader?
We are looking for reading volunteers at Glenbow School! If you or a family member are interested in helping children to develop a love of reading, please reach out to our Assistant Principal, Mme Sarah, at scaldwell@rockyview.ab.ca. Volunteering to read with students is a great way to connect with our community and get to know our school outside of your child’s classroom.
We are a Nut Aware and Scent Free school.  This means we want to ensure that all lunch and snacks do not contain nuts.  We have a number of students with life threatening allergies.  This includes things like Nutella and Peanut Butter.  We also have students and staff with severe allergies to scents.  Please do not wear any perfumes or colognes if you are volunteering in the school.  Thanks for your understanding.
Please Drive Slowly in the School Zone!
As we get back to school, please ensure you are driving slowly through the school zone around Glenbow.  We want to ensure all students get to and from school safely each day!
No Parking or Walking in the Staff Parking Lot
This is a reminder that there is no parking in the staff parking lot before/after school.
We also ask that you do not walk through the parking lot at anytime.  It is a busy spot and we do not want anyone getting hurt.

Emergency Closure of Schools or Cancellation of Bus Service Procedures
Dear Parents/Guardians:

In accordance with Board Policy 20 and Administrative Procedure AP5501, the following procedures will be followed if/when an emergency closure of a school and/or cancellation of bus service occurs. Please check the Late Bus App-“ Bus Status” (Available to download at Apple store and Google play) to ensure you are accessing the latest information about service and service interruptions.
  1. When schools remains open, it is your responsibility as a parent/guardian to determine if it is safe for your child go to school in/under severe weather conditions or warnings. This is consistent with parental choice and responsibility as outlined in the Education Act.
  2. It is your responsibility as a parent/guardian to make provisions for your child(ren) should school be closed.
    1. If closure procedures are initiated due to weather the school division will provide as much notice as possible. Once school begins for the day, school will not be closed because of weather conditions until regular dismissal time. Should it be deemed unsafe to dismiss students at the usual time, students may be kept at the school until it is deemed safe to depart or until alternate arrangements have been made.
    2. There is a possibility that schools may be closed during the day because of power failures, heating, or plumbing or other plant emergency. Every effort will be made to keep the students at the school; however, if circumstances warrant, students will be transferred to an alternate pre-planned location close by the school until the scheduled dismissal time.
  3. Decisions to close school because of inclement weather or other emergencies will be emailed to families, announced on local radio stations, and posted on the Rocky View Schools’ website, your school website, Facebook and Twitter. Information will also be available on RVS’ Late Bus App – “Bus Status”
  4. In the event that school is open but it is not possible for the bus to drive the bus route, you will have the option of transporting your child(ren) to school. In this case you must also pick up your child(ren) at the end of the school day.
  5. Drivers may also alter or delay their bus routes in response to weather conditions. If bus routes are delayed by more than 1 hour, or if route has been revised, you will be contacted by their bus driver. Any bus route delays more than 10 minutes and less than 1 hour will be updated on the Late Bus App (“Bus Status”).
Thank you for your support. Please contact us at glenbow@rockyview.ab.ca if you have any questions or concerns.
