Fun Lunch on Monday is Jugo Juice

Please Note:  We will be keeping the January 31st Fun Lunch date (no Fun Lunch on January 30th)

Don't forget that homeroom starts at 8:02am.  Doors are open at 7:55am for relaxed entry.  Please send your child around back to come in their designated doors each morning.  Please don't walk or park in the staff parking lot as we want everyone to be safe.
Glenbow New Playground Committee
Glenbow is in the initial stages of planning for a new playground!  We are seeking parents who would like to join our committee.  The fundraising for the playground will be through donations and grants and we are seeking individuals who would be willing to work with us to find donations and write grants.
We know this is a big job and commitment, but it will be a legacy project that you can be a part of that will benefit our school and community.
If you would like to join our committee, please email glenbow@rockyview.ab.ca

If you also know/work for companies that might be interested in donating to this project, please send an email to the address above.  We are looking to raise between $300,000 and $500,000, so many donations will be needed.
Kindergarten Registration Begins on January 23
We are excited to share that Kindergarten registration will begin shortly.

Alberta’s standardized age of Kindergarten entry requires students to turn five years old by Dec. 31 of the school year they begin Kindergarten. This means children born between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2018, can register for Kindergarten for the 2023/24 school year.

All new registrations for Kindergarten must be completed through SchoolEngage, RVS’ online registration system. During operational hours, schools will allow access to a computer and assist families who otherwise do not have access to a computer.

Families can visit the Rockyview School's dedicated Kindergarten registration webpage at rockyview.ab.ca for more information about Kindergarten registration.

Save the Date!
We will be hosting a Family Literacy Night on February 9th. More information will be shared soon!
Reading Support at School and Home
Last week we began our second cycle of literacy support for our grade 1 - 4 students.  Each 6 week literacy cycle is driven by our on-going reading assessments.  Students are grouped and provided targeted literacy instruction in a small group through guided reading, word work, phonics, sight word, and vocabulary building activities.  The targeted instruction is provided for approximately 30 minutes, four days per week.  While different groups may work with adults in different spaces, everyone is participating in the same activities, adjusted to their reading level.
You can have an active role in supporting reading development at home.  We encourage all parents to read with your child for at least 4 days a week (more if you can make it work).  Reading for 15 - 30 minutes a day with your child is an excellent way to build their skills and confidence.  Your child has access to a number of books in their classroom library and the Learning Commons.  You are also encouraged to drop by the Cochrane Library to find some books that interest your child.
Here are a few fun ways to read with your child:
  • Read to me - your child can listen to you read fluently and with expression.  You can also show your child how to track the words as you read
  • Read with me - you and your child can take turns reading
  • Listen to me read - your child can read to you.  This is important for our FI students
  • Listen to reading with me - listen to reading together, asking questions and making meaning together
Students at Glenbow also have access to online reading programs.  These include Raz Kids and Je lis.  Students can listen to these books and practice reading at home.  If you have any questions about accessing the programs, please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher.
The important piece in all of this is to make reading fun and joyful.  Making reading a regular part of your routine at home is an excellent way to reinforce the work that your child is doing at school and gives you an opportunity to support their hard work and it is quality time spent with your child!
If you have any questions, please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher.
Save the Date!  We are excited to share that we will be hosting a family literacy night on February 9th.   We hope you will join us.  More information to come in the new year!
Glenbow Has A Parent Lending Library!
Glenbow has a Home Lending Library with interactive and educational games that can be checked out and taken home to play as a family. Parents can drop by the school to sign out any of the games or write a note in your child's agenda and we can send it home for you to play.
Thank you to our School Council for using their grant money to purchase these fun activities!
Are you interested in being a volunteer reader?
We are looking for reading volunteers at Glenbow School! If you or a family member are interested in helping children to develop a love of reading, please reach out to our Assistant Principal, Mme Sarah, at scaldwell@rockyview.ab.ca. Volunteering to read with students is a great way to connect with our community and get to know our school outside of your child’s classroom.
We are a Nut Aware and Scent Free school.  This means we want to ensure that all lunch and snacks do not contain nuts.  We have a number of students with life threatening allergies.  This includes things like Nutella and Peanut Butter.  We also have students and staff with severe allergies to scents.  Please do not wear any perfumes or colognes if you are volunteering in the school.  Thanks for your understanding.
Please Drive Slowly in the School Zone!
As we get back to school, please ensure you are driving slowly through the school zone around Glenbow.  We want to ensure all students get to and from school safely each day!
No Parking or Walking in the Staff Parking Lot
This is a reminder that there is no parking in the staff parking lot before/after school.
We also ask that you do not walk through the parking lot at anytime.  It is a busy spot and we do not want anyone getting hurt.
Thanks for you cooperation.
